Building up the Body of Christ with welcoming arms, loving hearts and joyful worship.
We gather in community to worship God as the Holy Spirit moves us, and to encourage and support each other in faith. Meets on Friday nights 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.
What is a Charismatic Prayer Meeting?
It is a weekly gathering of Christians who give praise, thanks, and honor to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It’s a time we gather in community, to praise God on a one to one basis, as the Holy Spirit moves us.
We come to give our full attention to Jesus through the help of the Holy Spirit.
A Prayer Meeting Has Two Purposes:
Is the Charismatic Renewal approved by the Catholic Church?
In an address to the International Conference for Charismatic Leaders, Pope John Paul II said, “The Catholic Charismatic Renewal has helped many Christians to rediscover the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in their lives, in the life of the church and in the world, and this rediscovery has awakened in them a faith in Christ filled with joy, a great love of the church and a generous dedication to her evangelizing mission.” (Chariscenter USA Newsletter January 1999).
Can only Catholics attend our meetings?
Anyone may attend our prayer meetings; however, we are unapologetically Catholic, following the teachings of the magisterium.
What is the Biblical basis for the spiritual gifts (Charisms) we seek and exercise?
Charismatic Gifts: 1 Cor 12 – 14
Tongues: Acts 2:4
Interpretation of Tongues: 1Cor 14: 6-19
Prophesy: 1Cor 14: 1-5, Acts 11: 27-30
Word of Knowledge: Acts 5: 1-11
Discernment of Spirits: Acts 16: 16-18
Healing: Acts 3: 1-10
Miracles: Acts 5: 12-16
Why do people raise their hands and praise out loud at the meetings?
St. Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 2:8 --“…In every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands…” Raising our hands is a symbol of our surrender to God. Psalm 134:2 - “Lift up your hands towards the Sanctuary and Bless the Lord.” Psalms 117, 135 and many others tell us to Praise the Lord. So, we lift our hands and offer verbal praise in obedience to the Word of God. Singing in tongues is another form of praising the Lord you may hear at the meeting.
Do I have to speak at a Prayer Meeting?
No. Simply come to experience the life and love of Jesus. You may want to share your witness (see below). As you grow in your relationship with the Holy Spirit, you will discover that He has given you certain spiritual gifts (see previous section on Spiritual Gifts). You will then be prompted by the Holy Spirit to use these gifts during the prayer meeting.
What is a “Witness?”
Telling how the Lord is working in your life. It will always be a firsthand experience, not another person’s story. If the witness is led by the Spirit, the result will be that the center of the witness will be for the honor and glory of Jesus, not the person sharing (see John 16:14).
Do I have to participate in these activities?
No. Everyone expresses praise and thanksgiving in different ways. Some people will exercise the gift of praising God in tongues, while others will praise him in their natural language. Others will listen quietly. Everyone is encouraged to remain open to the Holy Spirit as they pray.
How Long do the Prayer Meetings Last?
Usually a minimum of 1-1/2 hours. We begin Praise & Worship at 7:30 PM. However, we gather to say the Rosary at 7:00 PM when time permits.
What is the content of a Charismatic Prayer Meeting?
A gathering song; opening prayer; time of praise and worship; singing; prophecy (God inspiring someone to speak); tongues (in song, praise, or prophecy); interpretation of tongues; ministering the Gifts of the Spirit to the people gathered in healing, miracles, word of knowledge, etc… (see 1 Cor. 12); scripture reading; teaching; witness; sharing (see 1 Cor. 14:26-33).
What is “Baptism in the Spirit”?
It is the RELEASE of the POWER of the Holy Spirit already within US that we received by faith at Baptism and at our Confirmation (Acts 1:8, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.”) This release of the Holy Spirit enables us to more fully live the Catholic Christian life.
